On a bareboat charter holiday, you have total flexibility over your route and your daily schedule. Your charter yacht is a floating hotel, fully equipped with everything you need for a live aboard week or more on board. You can reach locations that no car can reach.

You can choose to prepare and eat your meals on board or go ashore to sample traditional Hellenic cuisine at a taverna. The only restrictions are the weather and the time you have available.

Bareboat sailing - general Information

A bareboat yacht charter is you are responsible for the yacht and the crew during the charter and you plan your own itinerary. Greek Port authorities usually ask for a minimum of one skipper's sailing licence (for example RYA Day Skipper level, ICC, ASA 104, or any international equivalent)* plus there should be one experienced crew member on board to assist the skipper. If the co-skipper does not have any documentation he or she will be able to sign a declaration of responsibility attesting to previous sailing experience.

*licences should be in any language of the European Union. Any licence acceptable within the EU is acceptable in Greece.

If you do not have any experience or qualifications to charter a bareboat sailing yacht, you may need a skippered charter or you may consider doing a sailing course instead. If you have some experience but are not very confident about taking a bareboat yacht for charter, you may want to join a flotilla.

Check in procedures on bare boat yachts in Greece

The yacht will be handed over fully equipped with full water and fuel tanks, safety equipment, bed linen, blankets and towels. You are expected to return the boat in the same condition. In most cases a small cleaning charge is payable on embarkation to cover cleaning costs, unless you have made a prior arrangement to clean the yacht yourselves.

You will pick up your boat and meet the owner or Odyssey Sailing representative at the base-harbour of the island of embarkation. Sometimes it is possible to arrange transfers from the airport to your yacht. Check-in time is usually 5pm Saturday and check out time 9am Saturday, although this is flexible.

The yacht owner or representative will then begin an extensive check-in of the entire yacht and her complete inventory. You will be given a copy of the inventory list to check off individual items as you see them and are shown how they are used. This is the time you can ask questions and make sure you understand how everything operates. If you are feeling unsure, ask the owner or rep to take you out for a test sail. You will also be given an Acceptance document to sign once you agree that the yacht is in good working order, or to make a note of any problems so they won't be blamed on you.

Before handing over the keys, the rep will ask you for your licences and he will complete the official crew list with names, addresses and passport numbers of all crew members. You will be asked to sign the charter party contract if you have not already done so. Together with the boat's documents the rep will then visit the local port police to get your permission to leave port. Your licences will then be returned to you.

Finally, unless previously arranged to the contrary, you will be asked to pay the security deposit and end cleaning charge. The security deposit is refundable and is held against minor damages to the yacht and her contents caused by the skipper's negligence. If damages are more serious (over the amount paid), you will not be responsible for paying any more, as the yacht's insurance will cover it.

Sometimes, damage waiver / insurance options are available which can replace the fully refundable security deposit. When there is no damage waiver option available, you have the option of insuring your deposit independently if you wish. We can propose insuring your security deposit through the following European companies:
